Buying a Used Car from a Rental Company

Conventional wisdom holds that by buying a used car from a rental company you buy all the neglectful behavior of all the drivers that rented the car. The argument goes that when someone rents a car they treat it with less respect and care than they do their own car. BS is what I say. Most people treat other people’s stuff better than they do their own. When they have signed a document and put down a deposit saying if I don’t take care of it I will pay for it, they are even more careful.

To top things off buying a car from a rental fleet means your buying a car that had a team of mechanics whose job it was to give the car regular maintenance and keep it in top running order. Why? Because they love these cars. No, because their employers are subject to law suits if their customers get injured in a poorly maintained rental car.

I’m not sure where the conventional wisdom that rental cars are a bad idea to buy comes from, maybe from other car dealers. The cars in these fleets always seem to be priced below market value. Rentals companies price them low to overcome the bad rep. That means good prices on well maintained cars.

I got it all wrong. There is a better way to live like a millionaire. I started this blog because I had a goal, get a million dollars invested as soon as possible. I don’t really want a million dollars. It would be nice. What I really want is to live like someone who has a million dollars. I want the freedom that person has. What gives the millionaire freedom. The millionaire has income from investments that free him/her from working nine to five, five days a week, fifty weeks a year. What do I need to live like that other than a million or more invested.

• Mobility
• Time
• Enough money to do what I wish with my mobility and time.

Why mobility? Living the millionaire dream life for most includes going places, visiting new cultures, seeing and doing exciting things. If I want to be in Baja next month learning the fine art of fish taco cooking I need the ability to get there.

Why Time? It takes awhile to master the fine art of fish taco cooking, To live the dream life I need the freedom to stay there ‘til the experience is complete. The nine to five grind, fifty weeks a year doesn’t allow either.

Most of us are on the deferred life plan. Work hard, save hard until you have saved enough to live on the rest of your life. Quit your job. Finally do what you wish. We dream of the millionaire life style because it lets us bypass the work hard, save hard for 30-40 years part of the plan. There is another option. Do what you want now. Make enough money to fund doing what you want to do now. The trick of course is finding a way to make enough money while you are off traveling the world, skiing the alps, barrel jumping Niagara etc.

My original goal was to make a million dollars as soon as possible, live off the income of a million dollars invested and do what I wished with my time. I set a goal of five years. I had simply compressed the time frame for what most of us, me included are already doing, the deferred life plan. No, I don’t want to wait five years even. The new goal is this. Find a way to make enough money to do what I wish and have the mobility and time to do it now.

I wish I could say this realization just dawned on me. It didn’t. Over the holidays I happened on a copy The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris. I read it once cover to cover almost in a single sitting. Then I started over completing the steps covered in the book. Here was someone living exactly the life I am looking for. I was excited beyond measure at the possibilities’ opening up before my eyes.

The books provides a step by step process for achieving the goal of freedom of mobility and time. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

If you want to just dive in and try it yourself pick of a copy of Timothy Ferris’

Business Ideas | Entrepreneur Looking for the Best Home Based Business Ideas

You find yourself spinning fantastic day dreams of life as your own boss with unimaginably fat checks rolling in and the freedom to make all your own choices from what time to roll out of bed to where you want to plug in the laptop. Sounds nice doesn’t it. You have an initial hurdle to over come though before you get your hugely fantastic business idea off the ground. You need and idea. Yep, it’s step one and there is just no getting around it. No idea, no business, no big fat checks and freedom to work in boxers when you so choose. You spend an inordinate amount of your work day earning your pay by racking your brain to come up with your one in a million idea. It’s just no go. Nothing is coming. Doubt creeps in. Maybe it’s a pipe dream. Maybe everyone else who ever started a business had the idea first then went about building a business out of it. Don’t go there. I’d bet my socks 9 out of 10 of them dreamed about the life first then found and idea to get them there.

What you need is a little brainstorming fodder. Take a look at what other people are thinking or have done. It will switch your gears and get you thinking in directions you haven’t gone yet. Below are some good business idea fodder sites. Your not going to find your idea laid out ready to go in a neat package. People smart enough to come up with a successful business idea are just not dumb enough to give it away, generally anyway. You might get lucky. What you will find are ideas that tweak your interest, get you thinking a little more in depth and laterally at the same time. You may find that someone did well with and idea that could easily be modified to suit your particular interests or talents.

Ideablob People post their own business ideas here. Users vote and give feedback on the ideas.

SitePoint Market Place – If an online business or businesses is your dream this site is a goldmine. It is and auction site for websites. I’m not saying go there and buy a site. I’m just saying look through the listings. You will see tons of sites that are already making money. You should be able to get ideas that you could build yourself, not a copy of the site for sell but maybe the structure would work well in a different niche. Monthly income is listed for most these sites. I suspect the self reported incomes are generally inflated but you at least will discover an upper bound by looking at them.

Making money building niche content sites online relies on traffic. No traffic means no income. Search engine optimization, SEO is the process of tailoring your content, web design, and interaction with your niche’s community to best position yourself to direct natural search engine traffic to your site.

Search Engine Optimization is a career, a field of study, a huge topic. You could spend years studying it and still have a thing or two to learn. SEO is also one of those nice processes where knowing just a little takes you a long way. Knowing a lot is great and will give you that extra edge but knowing just the basics of SEO will give you the bulk of the benefit.

Keywords

Keywords in search engine optimization are the words or phrases people use to search for information via search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft’s Live Search. Those three by the way comprise the lion’s share of all searches on the internet.

Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keywords is a buzz word in niche content SEO Web Design circles. What are long tail keywords and why are they important. If you take a niche like SEO. The phrases SEO and Search Engine Optimization will have a huge number of searches associated with them. However, people looking for information related to SEO will use terms like “how to improve serp rank”, “Improve Search Engine Rank”, “Best Serp Results”, and hundreds more such terms. Each of these less frequently used terms will only compose a small percent of the over all searches conducted but added together this long tail of the curve comprises half or more of all the searches related to SEO. If you optimize for these lesser used terms you are likely optimizing your pages for keywords that are less often optimized by other webmasters. Therefore it is easier to rank well for these terms. So, the more competitive your niche the more you want to focus on these long tail keywords.

The first step in creating search engine optimized pages is discovering keywords related to your topic that searchers are actually using. On first blush you may feel you know these already. Keyword research will very likely prove you wrong. The time and effort required for keyword research is well worth the effort. You need to know the words searches really use. Otherwise all your optimization techniques and efforts will be useless. I can not stress this enough. Take the time to do the research on your niche. Even if you’ve already published content, do the research. Go back and optimize your existing content.

There are a number of free sites you can use to do your research. The truth is none of them will easily give you all the information you need. They are good for taking a look at a new niche you are considering getting into. Once you decided to go for a particular niche it is more than worth your money to purchase access to WordTracker. You can buy access for a week for about $30. If you have more than one niche to research, a week is plenty of time to cover a few. Without WordTracker you will spend considerably more time and never get as much info as you need.

The following are useful articles to guide you in your research.

Site optimization can be devided into two broad categories.

On page optimization

On Page optimization is the process of optimizing both the content of your pages and the design of your pages to be search engine friendly. To optimize your content follow these steps.

Web Content Optimization

Choose 2-3 keyword phrases from your keyword research to optimize. Choose 1-2 with high search frequency. Choose 1-2 with some frequency and a low number of competing pages (high KEI).

Place one or more of your keywords in the url of your page.

Place one or more of your keywords in the Title of your page.

Throughout the content of your page use your keywords in <h> tags.

Throughout the content of your page bold, italicize or underline your keywords.

Throughout the content of your page use your keywords in bulleted or numbered lists.

Insure that one or more of your keywords is present in the first sentence of your page.

Insure that one or more of your keywords is present in the last sentence or two of your page.

Web Design Optimization

Use css and divs to layout your page instead of tables. Tables flood the page with markup text making your actual content less prominent in the eyes of the search engines.

Design your page so that the source code for the page has your content placed near the top not the bottom. As much as possible have the markup code follow the content.

Use white space techniques, bullets, ordered list, header tags all filled with keywords.

Don’t display textual content as images or flash. They are ignored by the search engines.

Don’t use frames.

Minimize java script. Search engines don’t read it.

Don’t require visitors to accept a cookie.
Focus your efforts on making your content keyword rich. Search engines pay little or no attention to meta data tags (id <META NAME=”KEYWORDS” CONTENT=”a bunch of keywords”> ). Don’t waste energy.

Off page optimization

Off page optimization is the process of building links from other sites to your pages. Search engines rank the importance of a page, page rank, based on the number of pages across the internet that link to it and the importance of those pages. In other words, getting a link from www.msn.com to one of your pages will rank you better than one from www.joe-somebodys-homepage.biz.

It is also important to note that pages containing keywords relevant to your content linking to your page rank you better than links from irrelevant pages.

How to you build links to your pages. The hurdle here is that you don’t control the pages you want links to be placed on. You have to convince someone else to add links to their pages.

Become active in your niche’s community. Visit blogs and discussion boards relevant to your content. Whenever possible post your own comments on these sites. Sign your comments with a link to one of your pages. Be sure you have something to say. If you are obviously commenting only to get your link, you may get tagged as a spammer.

Contact webmasters of the sites you would like links from directly. Ask them politely to link to one of your pages. They might do it. They are more likely to do it if you have content that is original and useful to their visitors.

Contact any friend or family member you know who has a site or mypage page. Ask them for links too. Every link helps.

DON’Ts

This is simple really. Do the above and you will by definition have avoided most the “don’ts”. The one big “don’t” you must keep in mind is to avoid any technique considered to be black hat SEO (tricky Search Engine Optimization). How do you know when it is black hat SEO. If you at any time feel you are doing something or someone working for you is doing something to fool the search engines vs doing things to make the search engine’s job easier, assume it is a black hat technique. Why avoid black hat techniques. The search engine’s already know most of them and will penalize you for using them or perhaps even wipe your url from their index completely. If you find a successful as yet unknown black hat technique it will eventually be known and hurt you badly at that point. It’s best to play fair but compete hard.

If you want to go beyond the basics Search Engine Optimization For Dummies is an excellent next step.

Three months have passed since I started the quest to make a million dollars in under 5 years. I started this project with a multi pronged approach.

Invest in the stock market by contributing heavily to a brokerage account.

Increase the level of my monthly contributions by living frugally.

Increase the level of my monthly contributions by finding new ways to earn money above and beyond the salary from my day job.

Best Home Based Business Ideas

Finding new ways to earn money centered around the concept of home based businesses that I could run from home. I needed something I could do in my off hours that required very little start up cost and extremely flexible hours. I did whirlwind research, reading books, googling into the wee hours, brainstorming with friends. I’m losing money so far but not much. That’s ok. Three months is early in the game. I never expected to be raking in the cash at this point.

Frugal Living

Changing my spending habits on the other hand reaped immediate rewards. With just a few changes to my daily routines I’ve trimmed $200 a month from my living expenses. Wish I had started that 20 years ago. I’d be $260,000 closer to my goal.
Mostly this first three months was a head long charge up the steepest part of the entrepreneur’s learning curve. I crammed a lot of knowledge into my head about starting an online business, niche content sites, site monetization, web hosting services, Search Engine Optimization and Entrepreneurship in general.
I’ve taken my first steps building sites. I have three small sites including this blog up. They are just experiments at this point. I’ve monetized them with google adsense and Amazon. Amazingly, I have gotten the occasional click here and there. I really did not expect anyone to even find my sites yet much less click on the ads. It is a proof of concept at the very least. Put up a site with content and ads, if people come to your site, some will click the ads.

Entrepreneur’s Mindset

The biggest thing to happen over the last 3 months is a shift in me. I’ve never thought much about making a lot of money. I’ve always make enough to be comfortable and that was fine with me. Now I have goals that require much more money. So, making money is a big focus. The amazing thing is how that shift in focus changes the way you see the world. Everywhere I look now I see potential ways to make a buck. People I’ve know for years are now approaching me with their ideas for businesses. This shift is likely at the root of the oft repeated personal development guru’s claims that wealth can be manifested by consciously believing it can. I think the nugget of truth behind that belief is that focusing on making money opens your eyes to all the possible ways you can make money that you would have missed before. You begin to see the world through a new lens, a lens that highlights potential business opportunities.

Where am I in a nutshell after three months

This is a tried and true method for making money from home using the internet. It may not be the fastest way to generate income but it will last a lifetime.

By Paul E Lee

I really thought it took a super marketing guru to make money online. Boy was I wrong. Anybody, well almost anybody can make money online. I don’t know how you can make $10,000 or even $1000 dollars in your first month. But I do know that with some work, time and patience you will be on your way to making money from the comfort of your own home. This is a tried and true method laid out so anyone can understand and follow.

Here are the 5 most important rules to earning an income online

1. You can not spend it until you make it. Do not spend money on advertising until you have income from your website. Free stuff is your choice when starting out. I chose blogger to host my blog(website). The only thing you should spend money on is your domain name, to date i’ve only spent $10 on this site. As your site begins making money you may choose to use a portion of that money for advertising.

2. Content. You need to spend as much time as you possibly can creating new original content for your site. Your content needs be useful and informative. You are better off sticking with a few topics for your content so it will be easier to write.

3. Traffic. The big bad T word. This will be your biggest challenge. Most people give up after to short of a period, it takes time and then more time. To get traffic in the beginning you need to pick 10 places to get seen.
Use YAHOO answers, ezine articles, blog carnivals, post in forums related to your blog, comment on other peoples blogs(be sure the topic is related to yours).

4. Money makers. Google adsense will be your prime money maker. Commission junction will be your second biggest income. Set up a donation button people will donate money to you if your provide them with valuable information.

5. Patience. What is that, I need money now. Unfortunately I have not discovered how you can make a ton of money instantly. If you exercise some patience you will definitely make money online using these guidelines. Expect it to take 2-3 months just to start making about $100 a month. That’s the bad news. The good news is that once you reach that hurdle, your traffic, which is how you will make money, will spiral from there.

Like I said this is a tried and true method to make money online. There are other ways and you can possibly make more money faster. I’m telling you what I know. You can earn a six figure income in 1-2 years with the right amount of work. I will write How to make money online part 2 advanced techniques so be sure to check back.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to suddenly have an idea on your hands that was making you thousands of dollars a day? Martin Thomas gives you one. Lets see if you can spot the potential.

By Martin Thomas

In the immortal words of Emmerson, “all I need is one idea” Overnight wealth has a certain stigma that “sensible” people seem to be resistant to. The idea of the get rich quick variety is an object of ridicule and derision in alot of peoples eyes. However, with a little focused action and the right knowledge, rapid wealth is not only possible for you, but inevitable for the determined.

The first thing I want to do is qualify the above by saying “quick” means several years not overnight. Sure, you could write a hit song or contemporary book but these have alot to do with chance. People with determination generally don’t like chance because control is a solid aspect of wealth generation.

Anyone can have an idea. By that I mean virtually any idea can become workable unless its just totally “out there” What matters is that you act. But more then that, before you act, you must know how to make it work. Thats really what most people with a good idea lack.

So knowledge again is where the central workability comes from. So let me give you some knowledge right now. The knowledge of the wealthy. There are many ways to get rich very rapidly but I offer you an example below and some insights about what the wealthy know and have known for centuries.

Arbitrage is a concept that you should learn more about. Its a word that circulates in financial circles and is therefore obscured to the average person as just some odd french word that the stock market people use.

The truth is that arbitrage is the single biggest idea about wealth that you should understand. Doing an arbitrage deal is literally this……..If I offered you 70 cents for your crisp clean dollar note would you take the deal? What if you had $100,000 and I had $75,000 and I said look, let me deposit this money into your account in exchange for your money? Straight swap. How would you feel about that?

Well I imagine you’d say no. I wouldn’t blame you, its hardly a fair deal. Arbitraguers do this all day long. But this is the difference.

We deal in value and perceptions not numerical currency like cash. Or we deal wholesale and sell retail. There are hundreds of ways that I can swap my 70 cents for somebody elses dollar.

The wealthy have practiced arbitrage for as long as currency existed because arbitrage is the secret road to wealth. A secret that will never be openly talked about because it is so tightly held. My little contribution here will do nothing to change that balance, but consider yourself fortunate to learn about this and maybe it will spurr you on to a new life.

Here is a real world example of arbitrage that I practiced many years ago, when I was starting out broke, dejected, but hopeful.

It wasnt long ago but seems like centuries ago. Its pre-history now. One form of arbitrage is the concept of economies of scale. This arbitrage strategy relies on a single fact. An irrefutable reality about fiscal life on the planet earth. Here it is. When you buy something (of anything) in bulk, you are entitled to and more often then not get a very large discount on your purchase. When this bulk amount is “split up” and re-sold in traditional more popular chunks, your investment will return a decent profit.

So here is a get rich quick idea. One you can use right now to establish an income stream to replace your daily job. It can be reproduced and systemized to manufacture a very healthy income indeed.

When you look at newspaper and local journal price lists, you will notice they are very yielding to this concept of economies of scale. Simply a small ad may cost $140 for example. But buy a full page and you only pay say $900. Why? because its less work for the publication. Well my idea was to start a weekly page called “Martins Market” I approached 200 business owners face to face and told them they can get a small ad in my one page spread “Martins Market” for just $90 a full $50 cheaper then if they bought their ad from the paper directly. Do you think this offer interested a good percentage of the business owners I approached? You bet! Not only that, but they got a further discount if they paid up 6 months in advance.

I could fit 40 ads of that size onto my page. Being filled up, I made $3600 every week for an outlay of $900 for the page. I added value with nice graphics and the page got quite well recieved as my clients reported good returns from their ads. This was reproduced 20 times around the country, with 2 sales staff for every “Martins Market” I was netting close to $20,000 per week for a fairly lengthy period.

You will need a few dollars to try this, but its inevitable that if you do your research properly you can make this work and get exactly the same results.

My very best to you

Coffee is a great example. If you have the coffee habit(I do big time), chances are you can save more than you realize by brewing your own. If I told you I would pay you a quarter of a million dollars if you would start brewing your own coffee at work instead of buying it from your favorite barista would you do it? Look at the numbers below.

Ok, let’s assume you drink 2-3 cups every working day and pay roughly 2 dollars a cup.

Now let’s assume you could brew your own for about 25 cents a cup or roughly 63 cents a day.

Your savings by brewing your own are $4.37 a day. Yee haa!

It doesn’t sound like a fortune yet but let’s finish running the numbers.

If there are 240 work days in your working year at $4.37 a day you have 1049 dollars a year saved.

Invest that 1049 dollars a year in the stock market with an average rate of return of 11% over a 30 year career and you retire with an extra $245143.

I do this myself and keep it simple. I have an electric kettle on my desk and one of those plastic one cup drip brewers you pick up for a couple bucks at the grocery store. It sits on top my favorite cup. I brew coffee one cup at a time. At the end of the day I rinse the thing and that is that for maintenance, truly painless money.

The first thing I did in this effort to find a game plan for making a million dollars

Internet Business, Online Stock Trading, My Own Money Saving Tips Central

Having stated a goal and analyzed my starting situation the next step is to formulate a plan of attack to get from the starting situation to the goal.

The basic problem is this. I need to generate income well in excess of what I earn then invest that extra income in stocks and bonds to take advantage of the rate of return they offer ie Internet Business and Online Stock Trading. I could invest the extra income in a virtually risk free investment vehicle like a cd or money market fund to avoid the risk of losing some of my hard won loot. Five years is a short time frame for the stock market. It is quite possible that I will suffer a loss over that time period. I am going to take the risk though. I am in a hurry after all and need the higher rate of return stocks offer.

The first thing I did in this effort to find a game plan for making a million dollars fast was google the problem. Google is a modern wonder of the world if you ask me. It is always my first step when I have a problem to solve. The chances are good with any problem you encounter that some other helpful soul has encountered it, solved it, and published a blueprint to their solution somewhere on the web. Good googling skills can make you look like a genius. I googled “make a million dollars”, “make money fast”, “frugal living”, “online stock trading”, “financial freedom”, and a dozen or so more terms along those lines. I knew going in to those searches to expect tons of scams, multitier schemes, and buy your way to profit type sites. I was right. Wading through the torrents of people making their millions by selling you there system for making millions was a frustrating mess. I did find some useful and free articles to point me in a direction. Here are few links to info I found helpful.

http://geniustypes.com/five_ways_to_create_passive_income_with_little_or_no_money/

There is a trend in the links above. The direction of that trend is “how to make money from niche content sites“. This is a internet business approach that appeals to me. If I am going to make money I need to feel I am providing something in return. All the get rich systems that dominate searches related to making money fast may or may not work. I doubt they do but I haven’t tried any of them so I can not say for sure. The main idea that leads me to believe they do not work is this. If the sellers of those system had a full proof system for making huge sums of money easily with no risk and minimal effort why would they need to sell the system to me. The concept of making money online does appeal to me. My day job is software development. I design and write custom software applications. So, my technical skills are above average. Learning and using the technology needed to run an online business should be well within my abilities.

I thought about creating an internet business for years but always ran up against a mental block. My thinking was that you need the next killer idea like ebay or amazon or you needed a lucrative product or service to sell. I don’t have a product and to date the killer idea has alluded me. You don’t need those things. You don’t even need a site that produces tons of income. There is another option. Generate content, useful content about things you are passionate about. Publish that content on your own web sites then generate income from those sites via affiliate marketing programs like Amazon’s or ebay’s and pay per click programs like google’s adsense.

The beauty is you don’t need one hugely profitable site. You can build and maintain as many sites as you have time and interest to work on. If your sites only average $200 or $300 dollars a month in revenue, no problem. If you have 10 or 20 of them, that is a lucrative internet business. You are turning your hobbies and passions into income and providing useful information to your visitors in return. All in all it is an approach to earning that suits me. Will it be enough to generate the extra $8900 a month I need to make my goal. I have no idea but it is a starting point and leg two of my game plan an internet business. Leg one was investing every penny I can in a brokerage account, online stock trading.

Leg three, frugal living. I already contribute a big chunk of my income into investment accounts. If I had the time the beauty of compounding interest would turn those contributions into the million dollars I need. I don’t have the time though. Hense the need to up my contributions to $8900/ month. I don’t make $8900 a month from my day job. So, no amount of penny pinching and frugal living is going to solve my problem. However, every little bit counts. I am going to become a penny pinching guru and invest the savings. Maybe I can even turn my new found fountain of frugal living knowledge into a niche site!

Leg four, the Lottery. Yes, yes I know the odds are against it and it does not fit in well with my frugal living approach but if I could just pick that winning ticket this would all be so much easier. So, I will be purchasing the occasional lotto ticket. After all my odds of winning may be horrendously bad but they seem infinitely better if I buy a ticket than if I don’t. Cross your fingers for me.

In a nut shell my 4 legged plan of attack is:

1) Online Stock Trading - Contribute $8900/month into investments in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds targeting a Rate of Return of %14 percent annually.
2) Build an internet business by developing niche web sites relevant to my own areas
of interest and monetize the sites through affiliate advertising and pay per click
programs. Use the proceeds to generate a portion of the $8900/month needed.
3) Frugal Living - Cut all the living costs I can and invest the savings to generate another portion of the needed $8900/month.
4) Buy the occasional Lotto ticket ’cause you just never know.

Step number one on the road to my first million, write down the goal(Goal: Bank My First Million). Yee haa! Step one is done. It is a simple goal really. I want to make a million dollars fast. Who doesn’t? Simple yes, will it be easy? Doubtful. I will be looking into simple solutions to save money every day, frugal living ideas, home based business, and making money from online jobs. First however is step two. It seems reasonable to figure out where I am starting from.

Analysis of personal finances:

Current Income:

Total Income:

Distance To Goal:

~$870,000

Ok, so all I need is another $870,000.

Now, step 3, it’s time to think about how I get from $130,000 to $1,000,000 soon. I am ruling out illegal means for ethical reasons and because this journey is all about freedom. Prison is contraindicated.

Setting aside money from your pay check to invest in stocks, bonds, and real estate is a tried and true no frills traditional way to accumulate wealth. Once you set up the automatic deduction from your pay you learn to live on what is left over. It is a set it and forget it approach to saving for retirement college educations, etc. If your job makes matching contributions, all the better. If you aren’t doing this already, start. For a little more active approach or just peace of mind, read the book Get Rich Slowly: Building Your Financial Future Through Common Sense by William T. Spitz. It’s a great book for explaining the basics of investing. It gives you a solid sense of how to invest, what to expect in return and the sort of wealth you can expect to have down the line. Another good one, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns by John C. Bogle. The problem for me is in the title of Spitz’s book. Slowly and soon just don’t go together.

There is a handy formula for figuring out the future value of your investing efforts.

S=Starting Balance
I=Monthly Interest Rate (i.e. a 12% Annual Interest Rate = 1% Monthly Interest Rate)
M=Monthly Deposit
N=Number of Months

Future value =M*(((1+I)^N-1)/I)+S*(1+I)^N

Personal Finance Investing Calculator - Future Value Calculation

Currently I contribute $800/month to my investment accounts. Assuming a 10% annual return on investments Given my starting balance of $130,000 It would take me 16 years to reach my goal. I am shooting for a conciderably shorter time frame, say less than five years. I am not going to liquidate my brokerage and 401k accounts. I still think investing is the smart thing to do with money saved. The question is how to speed it up. I could look for high risk stocks and bonds with higher expected yields. Playing some more with the formula above I see that I would need a return of %38/year to make my goal. That is just unlikely. The other value I can tweak is the monthly contribution. Again playing with my formula I find that if I up my monthly contribution to about $10,000 a month I can make my goal. Playing a little bit more I opt for somewhat more aggressive stocks in the hopes of averaging %14 a year. At this rate I need to contribute $8900 a month. Subtracting the 800 a month I already contribute I only need to find a way to add another $8100 a month. Simple.
